  1. In English history, a thief on horseback who
  2. robbed travellers on the highway (those who
  3. did so on foot were known as footpads). They
  4. continued to flourish well into the 19th
  5. century. Among the best-known highwaymen were
  6. Jonathan Wild, Claude Duval, John Nevison
  7. (1639-1684), the original hero of the `ride
  8. to York', Dick Turpin and his partner Tom
  9. King, and Jerry Abershaw (c. 1773-1795).
  10. With the development of regular coach
  11. services in the 17th and 18th centuries, the
  12. highwaymen's activities became notorious, and
  13. the Bow Street runners (see police) were
  14. organized to suppress them. Favourite haunts
  15. were Hounslow and Bagshot heaths and Epping
  16. Forest, around London.
